Rate Limiting
Upcoming API and MCP rate limits
Rate limits will be introduced for both the REST API and the MCP server in Q4 2026. The specific limits will be published on this page before they take effect, and we will contact firms that are likely to be affected based on their past usage.
When a limit is exceeded, requests return HTTP 429. Retry with a backoff strategy rather than immediately.
Report emails
The MCP tool send_report_email emails a report built from LeanLaw data to users in the firm. These limits
apply today.
Daily limits
| Limit | Value | What counts |
|---|---|---|
| Per firm | 200 recipients a day | Every recipient of every email, to and cc combined. One email to 50 people uses 50. |
| Per recipient | 50 emails a day | Every report email a user receives, whether in to or cc. |
- Both limits reset at midnight UTC. They are not a rolling 24-hour window.
- The sender only counts if they are also a recipient.
- An email that would take any recipient over their limit is rejected as a whole with HTTP
429. Nothing is sent and nothing is counted. - An email that fails to send is not counted.
- The tool's response reports how many recipients the firm can still email today.
Per-email limits
| Parameter | Limit |
|---|---|
to | At least 1 recipient |
to + cc | At most 100 unique recipients |
subject | Required, at most 200 characters, on a single line |
htmlBody | Required, at most 500 KB |
| Recipients | Active users of the firm |
Report emails can only be sent from a connection signed in as a LeanLaw user (OAuth) that has been granted permission to send email. They cannot be sent with an API key.
